2019 Ghana Rugby League Championship (GRLC) defending champions Bulls Rugby League Club (RLC) handed current league leaders Ghana Skolars RLC their first defeat of the season beating the 2019 runner-ups 20-18 on Sunday 6th June 2021 at the University of Ghana (UG) Rugby Field.
Bulls have kicked off their title defence in poor form losing 24-14 to Accra Panthers RLC before struggling to 12-8 victory over newcomers Nungua Tigers RLC.
The champions would however find their feet against Skolars almost taking them to the cleaners in the first half with 3 tries and a double conversion leaving the league leaders with just a single try and a conversion. Nothing seemed to be working for Skolars in the first half as a very robust Bulls’ defence shaded the forwards of their huge opponents throughout the first half.
The second half would see an improved tactical and disciplined play from Skolar’s defence which brought balance to the game as much of the half was played in the centre of the pitch, the 2019 runner-ups would however get a breakthrough as the Bulls’ defence was caught sleeping at the back.
The Bulls rallied around and got a try back but the revitalised Ghana Skolars side would keep pushing but would only get a try at the tail end of the game which was not enough to avoid their first defeat of the season.
