Chelsea are weighing up a potential move for former striker Alvaro Morata in their search for a new No 9, according to reports.
The Blues have been keen on signing Barcelona forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer, however they have become frustrated in their attempts to agree a deal.
And Thomas Tuchel’s side have identified Atletico Madrid talisman Morata as a potential alternative to the former Arsenal front-man this window.
The 29-year-old previously spent two seasons at Chelsea but struggled to make an impact in west London after his £60million arrival – scoring 24 times for the Blues.
The Spanish international was then shipped out on loan to Atletico Madrid in 2019, before making his move permanent a year later.
Morata has since spent the last two seasons on loan at Italian outfit Juventus, netting 32 goals in 92 appearances for the Bianconeri.
The marksman returned to the Wanda Metropolitano this summer with the expectation of departing Atleti, yet the 29-year-old has started both of the club’s LaLiga games so far this term.
The Spanish striker scored a brace in Diego Simeone’s side’s 3-0 opening day victory over Getafe, which has caught the attention of Chelsea.
The Blues submitted a player plus cash deal for Aubameyang earlier in the window, which would see Marcos Alonso move to the Camp Nou, yet Barca are proving difficult in their demands.
Tuchel is keen to recruit the former Arsenal forward, as the pair enjoyed a fruitful relationship together at Borussia Dortmund.
Chelsea’s need for firepower was clear for all to see in their 3-0 drubbing by Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday.
The Blues have lost forwards Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner this summer, and are hot on bringing a new No 9 to Stamford Bridge ahead of the closure of the window.
