Ghanaian weightlifter Christian Amoah will be coming home empty-handed as the 22-year-old finished fourth (4th) in Group B of the Men’s 96kg at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics earlier today 31st July 2021.
Amoah was unable to lift a high enough weight to stand a chance of securing a medal lifting a combined 315kg (145kg in the Snatch portion of the event and 170kg in the Clean & Jerk), 44kg less than the eventual winner of the group Cuba’s Olfides Saez Vera who lifted a combined 359kg.
The 22-year-old who serves as the captain of the Ghana weightlifting team, the Cranes, qualified for the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games following his splendid performance at the African Weightlifting Championships in Kenya held back in May.
The Bukom based weightlifter won silver in the Men’s 96kg division of the event lifting a combined 333kg (149kg in the Snatch portion of the event and 184kg in the Clean & Jerk) to qualify for the Games.
He is also not a stranger to the Games having competed in the Men’s 85kg at the 2016 Rio Olympics where he finished in 20th place having lifted a combined 283kg (130kg in the Snatch portion of the event and 153kg in the Clean & Jerk).
Amoah joins light heavyweight boxer Shakul Samed, judoka Kwadjo Anani, triple jumper Nadia Eke and swimmers Abeiku Jackson and Unilez Takyi who have unfortunately been dropped out of the competition.
Group A of the Men’s 96kg will kick off later today at 10:50 AM, after which we will get a feel of Amoah’s final position in the competition.
