Junior Rugby League side Firm Foundation made history today 23rd May 2021 defeating opponents African Warriors 12-0 to become the first side to win a game in the maiden edition of the Ghana Junior Rugby League Championships.
The Junior Rugby League Championship is a new addition to the Rugby League Federation Ghana‘s (RLFG) Rugby League Championships which kicked off today at the University of Ghana (UG) Rugby Field.
The junior championship will see Firm Foundation take on African Warriors in a best out of five contest to determine the country’s first-ever junior champion. Meaning that today’s victors will need to defeat their opponents a further two times to be declared the country’s first-ever junior champions.
Speaking to The Press Box about the championship, Youth Development Coordinator, Collins Ofosu, said he is hoping the junior championships would encourage other Middle East Africa (MEA) Rugby League countries into developing their very own junior division.
“The junior tournament is definitely the first of its kind in Ghana and we are leading the forefront across the MEA sub-region and hopefully this will also encourage other countries who are yet to start their junior leagues.”
Collins also revealed his hope that with the start of the junior championship, it will encourage more parents into letting their kids participate in the sport “If they [parents] are able to see what the kids are doing they will feel a lot more comfortable with allowing their kids to also participate in rugby league.”
The Championships are set to run till 4th July 2021 and will be live on the RLFG’s official Facebook page.
