Sulemanu’s defeat means that Ghana’s only hope of securing a medal in boxing lies in the hands of 20-year-old Samuel Takyi who has made it to the quarter-finals of the Men’s Featherweight division where he will face Colombia’s Ceiber Ávila.

The Ghana captain gave his all during the Games defeating Marte De la Rosa of the Dominican Republic in a split 3-2 decision to get make it further (to the Round of 16) than he did during his 2012 London Olympics appearance in which he was eliminated in the first round of the Men’s light flyweight division.

Sulemanu joins weightlifter Christian Amoah, light heavyweight boxer Shakul Samed, judoka Kwadjo Anani, triple jumper Nadia Eke and swimmers Abeiku Jackson and Unilez Takyi who have unfortunately been eliminated from the Games.

Samuel Takyi is set to take on Colombia’s Ceiber Ávila tomorrow 1st August 2021 in what would be the second Men’s Featherweight quarter-final bout of the day at 2:48 AM GMT.
