English Premier League newly-promoted side Nottingham Forest have reportedly signed Super Eagles of Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin for a club-record fee.
Joined Union Berlin in 2021 after a successful seasonal loan spell which earn Liverpool €7.5, a €6.4M in surplus when he was first signed in 2015 from Nigeria-based club Imperial Academy, the 24-year-old has returned to the Premier League once again for a reported €17M and a five-year deal surpassing club’s highest-paid transfer of €15M in 2018 for Portuguese attacker Joao Carvalho.
Awoniyi to recall involved in 20 goals last season in 43 appearances across all competitions and was the 6th highest scorer in the Bundesliga with 15 goals in 31 league games -helping Union Berlin to the 5th place finish which guarantees the Europa League football next season for the first time in 20 years.
Joining “the Tricky Trees” this summer, he becomes the first club signing. “It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League“, said Awoniyi following his move. “Having spoken to [Forest boss] Steve Cooper about our ambitions and looking at Forest, with its great history, it’s a club that I want to be part of“.
A dream come true for Awoniyi, will he prove Liverpool wrong for not giving him the chance at Anfield?.
